Zeitlos trotz T.Rex

All The Young Dudes war David Bowies Versuch, die Band Mott The Hoople am Leben zu halten. Die britische Glamrock Truppe hatte vier kommerziell erfolglose Alben heraus gebracht. Trotz einer großen Live-Fangemeinde wollte sich die 1972 auflösen. Bowie war mit dem Bassisten Peter Watts befreundet und bot an, einen Song für die Briten zu schreiben. Der erste Versuch Suffragette City wurde abgelehnt. Darauf setzte er sich der Legende nach zu Ian Hunter in dessen Appartement und schrieb vor dessen Augen All the young dudes:

Der Song wurde ein großer Hit und ist heute noch in zahlreichen Filmen wie Juno, The Wackness oder Clueless zu hören.

All the young dudes ist das Gegenstück zu Bowies Rock'N'Roll Suicide vom Album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Während letzterer ein Abgesang auf den alten Rock'n'Roll ist wurde All the young dudes zu einer Antihymne des Glamrocks. Die nächste Generation konnte über das "revolutionäre" der Beatles und Stones nur noch müde lächeln. Die 60er waren endgültig tot und mit ihnen auch die Ansprüche der Hippies an Musik:

1978 arbeiteten Bruce Springsteen und Patti Smith in angrenzenden Studios an ihren Alben Darkness On The Edge Of Town bzw. Easter. Die Bands tauschten Tapes aus. Springsteen komponierte einige Songs im Stile der Patty Smith Group. Because the night war ursprünglich das Klagelied eines Arbeiters mit lateinamerikanischem Klang-Flair. Der Song passte jedoch nicht zu den anderen Stücken auf Darkness On The Edge Of Town.

Patti Smith schrieb neue Lyrics, die nun aus einer eindeutig weiblichen Perspektive stammten. Sie überarbeitete außerdem den Song, so dass er wesentlich rockiger wurde.

Depeche Mode veröffentlichten 1986 ihr Album Black Celebration. Stripped ist eine der fünf Singles.

Stripped war für seine Zeit absolut innovativ. Depeche Mode benutzten als Beat ein gedrosseltes verzerrtes Motorradmotorengeräusch und als Samples Feuerwerk sowie den Anlasser eines Autos. Die gleichen Samples wurden später für die B-Seite Breathing in Fumes verwendet.

Rammstein verwendeten Bilder aus Olympia, der Dokumentation der Olympischen Spiele 1936 von Leni Riefenstahl und spielten damit mit ihrem Naziimage. David Bowie veröffentlichte 1970 (in England 1971) sein drittes Album The Man Who Sold The World. Es ist die erste Zusammenarbeit mit Teilen der Spiders From Mars, z.B. mit Mick Ronson oder Mick Woodmansey.

Amerikanisches Cover

Das Album hatte keinen großen kommerziellen Erfolg. Während es in England noch Platz 26 der Charts erreichte verpasste es in den USA die Top 100 Billboard Charts. Das The Man Who Sold The World ist eine Rockplatte mit Metal und Gothic Einflüssen. Die Texte sind düster. Obwohl es kein typisches Bowie Album sein wird, zeigen sich bereits viele Stärken, wie die musikalische und textliche Bandbreite von Bowie. Der Titeltrack gehört zu den besten Songs, die er je geschrieben hat.

Einflüsse

Als eine seiner Inspirationen für TMWSTW gilt die SF Novelle The Man Who Sold The Moon von Robert A. Heinlein aber auch Werke von H. P. Lovecraft (wesentlich stärker allerdings bei Supermen auf dem gleichen Album spürbar - dessen Thema eine übermächtige Rasse von Außerirdischen ist. ) sowie das Gedicht Antigonish von William Hughes Mearns, das auch den Beinamen The Little Man Who Wasn't There trägt:

The Police veröffentlichten Message In A Bottle 1979 auf ihrem zweiten Studioalbum Reggatta de Blanc.

Der Song handelt von einem Schiffbrüchigen auf einer verlassenen Insel. Er sendet eine Flaschenpost mit der Bitte um Hilfe aus, verliert jedoch im Laufe der Zeit alle Hoffnung auf Liebe. Nach einem Jahr findet er heraus, das unzählige Menschen wie er isoliert voneinander leben, in dem er ein Meer von hundert Millionen Flaschen auf dem Ozean treiben sieht.

Der Song ist eine Metapher für Einsamkeit und den Verlust geliebter Menschen. Die Akzeptanz dieser menschlichen Erfahrungen und gleichzeitig die Erkenntnis, dass Menschen überall auf der Welt sie teilen, lassen den Protagonisten reifen.

Der Komponist - Sting - sagte selbst über den Song: I think the lyrics are subtle and well crafted enough to hit people on a different level from something you just sing along to. It's quite a cleverly put together metaphor. It develops and has an artistic shape to it. Quelle
