Hotel California
1976 erschien auf dem gleichnamigen Album einer der beiden größten Hits der Eagles Hotel California.
Der Text erzählt die Geschichte eines Reisenden, der in einer abgelegenen Gegend in einem Hotel absteigt. Die Hotelbewohner sind zwar freundlich bilden jedoch eine verschworene Gemeinschaft. Sie sind Gefangene ihrer Süchte, denen sie hemmungslos frönen. Er selber lernt, dass er das Hotel zwar verlassen kann, es ihn jedoch bereits so verändert hat, dass er es niemals hinter sich lassen kann.
Hotel California ist eine Abrechnung mit dem Amerikanischen Traum, der in den späten 70ern immer mehr zum Alptraum wird. Die Eagles sehen ihn als eine Antwort auf ihre negativen Erfahrungen mit dem Starruhm. Das Hotel, das auf dem Cover des Albums abgebildet ist ist ein reales Hotel, das Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Andere Interpretationen sehen das Hotel California als Symbol für eine Hippie-Sekte, Satanisten um Anton Szandor Lavey, Drogen oder für eine psychiatrische Klinik. Gerade für die Sucht Theorie lassen sich im Text verschiedene Beispiele finden.
