1978 arbeiteten Bruce Springsteen und Patti Smith in angrenzenden Studios an ihren Alben Darkness On The Edge Of Town bzw. Easter. Die Bands tauschten Tapes aus. Springsteen komponierte einige Songs im Stile der Patty Smith Group. Because the night war ursprünglich das Klagelied eines Arbeiters mit lateinamerikanischem Klang-Flair. Der Song passte jedoch nicht zu den anderen Stücken auf Darkness On The Edge Of Town.

Patti Smith schrieb neue Lyrics, die nun aus einer eindeutig weiblichen Perspektive stammten. Sie überarbeitete außerdem den Song, so dass er wesentlich rockiger wurde.
